Champions League: Lyon strongly fancied to make it five-in-a-row in 2020

The draw for the 2020 Women’s Champions League quarter-finals has produced four interesting ties, with each featuring some enthralling sub-plots that are sure to excite fans of the sport.

Holders Lyon are big favourites to win the competition for the fifth successive year, but the likes of Arsenal, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid will be eager to knock them off their perch.

Read on as we take a closer look at the four matches and predict who we think will progress to the semi-finals.

Arsenal v Paris St-Germain

Arsenal are the only English club to previously win the Champions League, but they face a difficult test if they’re to add another success this season.

The Gunners have drawn Paris Saint-Germain in the last eight and will face Lyon in the semi-finals if they make it through.

PSG were beaten 3-2 on aggregate by Chelsea at the same stage last year and will be eager to go one better this time around.

However, Arsenal have been in fine form this season and look a good bet to book their place in the last four.

Glasgow City v Wolfsburg

Glasgow edged out Brondby on penalties in the last 16, but they will have their work cut out to defeat Wolfsburg in the next round.

The two-time European champions have breezed into the quarter-finals and are expected to prove too classy for the Scottish side.

Wolfsburg have dropped just two points in the Bundesliga this term and will fancy their chances of making it through to the last four.

The German outfit were beaten by Lyon in last season’s quarter-finals, but are fully expected to progress further this year.

Atletico Madrid v Barcelona

Barcelona are favourites to win this all-Spanish clash, but it would be foolish to underestimate Atletico’s chances of upsetting the odds.

Barca have been in imperious form in this season’s competition, comfortably defeating Juventus and FC Minsk in the last two rounds.

They reached the final for the first time last year and are seeking redemption after being demolished 4-1 by Lyon.

However, Atletico’s 3-2 aggregate victory over Manchester City in the previous round was a big statement of intent and they could prove troublesome in this tie.

Lyon v Bayern Munich

Lyon have been the team to beat in Europe over the past few years and will prove difficult to stop in this season’s competition.

The French outfit were untroubled by Ryazan-VDV and Fortuna Hjorring in the last two rounds, scoring 27 goals on their way to the quarter-finals.

Bayern were beaten by Barca in the semi-finals last season and still appear to lack the quality needed to win the Champions League.

Lyon should progress through this tie with ease and look a good bet to go on and lift the trophy once again.
