Continental Cup quarter-final draw

There was late drama when the group stages of the Continental Cup wrapped last week with Sheffield United’s late equaliser against Coventry United enough to take knock Liverpool out. Elsewhere, Brighton got the win they needed to confirm their progression as most teams scrapped it out for placements and pride.

With the last eight confirmed the draw for the first round of knock-outs took place earlier today.

First out, five-time winners Arsenal drew familiar foes Reading (after a re-draw as Arsenal would have been illegible to play Brighton as both were in the same group).

Having topped their group, Sheffield United were the only Championship team to be seeded (and one of just two who made it through) but were given the toughest possible runner-up in current holders, Manchester City.

One of the more impressive sides in the group stage – and the only one to keep a hundred percent record – Manchester United drew Brighton ensuring the longest possible trip north for the Seagulls.

Finally, Chelsea drew Championship title hopefuls, Aston Villa but just like Sheffield United versus Man City, the part-time team will be heavily unfavourited to progress to the last four.

Arsenal vs Reading
Sheffield United vs Manchester City
Manchester United vs Brighton and Hove Albion
Chelsea vs Aston Villa

All ties are scheduled to be played on 15/16 January with the final still slated for the 29 February.
